SIR BRANCH 81 BULLETIN FOR MAY 2012

THE BIG SIR SAYS:

Congratulations to the SIR member’s who helped recruit and sponsor the six new members to Branch 81 within the last month! This is an excellent accomplishment; however, as you can see from the Membership section summary,
with the losses that occurred within the same time period, we have experienced an overall reduction in membership year-to-date. This fact emphasizes our real need to continue to concentrate on recruiting and retention of members as one of our highest priorities. It also highlights another paramount need to increase the active participation of each member in achieving the objective of SIR helping one another in making the transition into retirement more successful and enjoyable. That is a tall order and it takes a lot of teamwork to make it happen. To put it into baseball terms, we need more regular player, pinch-hitters, designated batters, closing pitchers, ground keepers, and managers to make our Branch 81 a winner in our league of SIR branches.

With this challenge in mind, we need team players fill the following positions in our SIR branch:

             Treasurer
             Assistant  Treasurer
             Assistant Secretary
             Assistant Web Site Manager

If you will provide the Branch with a few hours of your experience and time to your fellow SIRs, please contact me or any member of the SIR board (they all are listed in this and every bulletin) and let us answer any question about the offices and help you fit your experience into the needs of Branch 81. To assist you in this process, one of the Board member’s will be contacting you regarding your experience, interest and active participation. Filling in, or substituting for one of the openings, will both help the Branch as well as give you satisfaction in knowing that you are still helping out with your background and knowledge to make things happen.

Please give this subject and need thought. Talk to the Board members who call you, concerning your thoughts as to how and where you can best participate.

See you on May 1 st at our luncheon meeting. Contact me there, or any of our Board members, about our need for help and your ability to participate.

Stu Bolinger, Big Sir

THE LITTLE SIR SAYS:

Our speaker for the May1st SIR luncheon will be William Fisher. Mr. Fisher will discuss the national effort to defeat Alzheimer’s disease. His education and experience qualifies him to speak on the subject having cared for family
members while gaining a knowledgeable assessment of the agencies that help and support those who suffer from this affliction. He will dispel many of the myths and describe what information and services that each of us should be aware of in order to contend with this costly and heartbreaking disease that effects many of us and our families today. You should come and hear our qualified speaker for I am sure many of you are currently experiencing the anxiety and suffering of family members, friends and neighbors

Don Egan, Little SIR.

TREASURER SAYS:

Our request for the $20.00 annual contribution is still being paid by members. We are close to our goal of having sufficient funds to meet the financial needs of the Club this year but it is critical for those who have not
yet paid to do so now. For those SIR members who have not contributed, I will send out a final reminder and enclose a self-addressed return envelope for those who have been delinquent or procrastinating. To further assist members who may have lost the donation information, Secretary, Wayne Brock will again accept
donations, before the meeting, in the main lobby.

SPEAKER - MAY 1ST, 2012 LUNCHEON

Our speaker for the May 1st meeting will be William (Bill) Fisher, CEO for the Alzheimer’s Association of Northern California and Northern Nevada No. 1987, which is the largest chapter in the 70 chapter Alzheimer’s Association
Network. His presentation will address, "Overview and Update on the National Movement to Defeat Alzheimer’s". He has speeches have been hailed by numerous SIR, Rotary, Kiwanis and many other community organizations as a number "10", as it provides useful, current, factual and vital information on the 6th leading causes of death in the
United States. He will dispel some of the myths, describe what information and services that each of us should be aware of to fight and defeat this costly and heart-breaking disease that is affecting many of us and/or our families today. It will become an even greater challenge as our population ages and must be defeated for the sake of our country’s ability and families to financially fund and
control Alzheimer’s.

Mr. Fisher is a graduate of Grinnel College and former student at Chicago Theological Seminary, University of Chicago and the University of Illinois. He was the Director of Proviso Day Care Center, a multi-site, not-for-profit
childcare program for low-income families in the Chicago area for 12 years before moving to California. He currently makes his home in Cupertino
.

Mr. Fisher’s presentation should be of interest to our members and theirfamilies. An excellent opportunity to bring along a friend and prospective member to hear about a subject that impacts the country.

                                                      MEMBERSHIP INFORMATION

The current Branch 81 membership is members. Our planned membership goal continues to be 200 members in 2012. We indeed, with your help, have made membership progress during the past year 2011. However we did not reach our goal of 200 members. We want to renew our goal to do so this year WITH YOUR CONTINUED
SUPPORT TO BRING IN NEW MEMBERS. We require everyone’s efforts to accomplish this membership attainment.

We, on the Board, recognize that speaker’s help draw members to the luncheons but we need your support to indicate to us what type of and subjects for speakers appeal to the members. Talk to the Board members, including Don Egan, Little Sir, who has the responsibility of selecting speakers about your preferences, In addition, there will be a card left on the tables for you to indicate your personal ideas and possibly names of speakers you have heard in the past. Kindly help us to help you. Thank you in advance for your help, interest and participation in assisting us to find qualified speakers
.

SIR AREA TWO ACTIVITIES

There are a number of travel activities sponsored by local SIR Branches. The information regarding these excursions is represented by brochures available at the travel table and explainable by Clarence Nixon our travel chairman. Review the travel information and please contact Clarence for additional information.

The Area 2 Computer and Technonoly Group invites all SIRs and their guests to their meeting at the Walnut Creek Elks Lodge on Thursday, April 19th at 9:00AM.

They feature a live web presentation about something more of us really need to do: backing up our computer’s hard drive. Gene Barlow will discuss the more popular backup approaches and point out the advantages and limitation of each approach. He will then describe a backup approach that he believes will give you the best protection for your computer. He will offer a free software product to each of the attendees to monitor the well being of their own hard drive.

Time permitting; Dick Curry will lead a Q&A discussion to address current computer issues that you identify. Please bring your questions and join us for a fun and information session. Coffee and cookies will be available. A small $5.00 donation is requested to pay for the hall and refreshments.

Our May 17, 2012 scheduled meeting will include home automation and security, and new consumer devices. Later in the year, we hope to discuss principles of basic scanning and sending images, photo restoration and, possibly, developments in genealogy research. If you can suggest other titles of interest, please contact one of the co-chairs.
